Does an AI Press Release Help or Hurt SEO? Our Tracking Data

Key takeaways

  • SEO is rather moot for an AI-drafted release. The outbound link is rel=sponsored and passes no authority, and nothing here lifts your own site in Google.
  • In the 12 months to 26 October 2026, 91 of 96 release pages appeared in Google for 48 clicks and 7,272 impressions, against 1,146 clicks for the blog's 90 posts.
  • Of nine releases published between 22 September and 13 October 2026, eight were cited by an AI engine by day seven, most at position one.
  • Every recorded citation points at the release page on pressonify.ai, none at a client domain: 84 of 84 at the 27 October 2026 check.
  • It works for small businesses and startups without a brand footprint; results may not be as impactful for well-established multi-channel brands.

An AI-drafted press release neither earns nor loses you much in classic SEO, and I would not buy one to raise your own site in Google. The sponsored link it carries is worth little to nothing for SEO. What it does well is something else: it gets content out early, in a form that AI engines ingest easily, and it helps them form an understanding of your business. That backs up your own content and raises your brand's citability.

People assert that SEO and GEO, generative engine optimisation, are one and the same. The reality is rather different, and our own numbers show the gap.

What Google does with a release page

Google indexes and ranks a release page for its announcement query, then sends almost nobody. Here is what Search Console showed for the 12 months to 26 October 2026:

  • 91 of the 96 release pages in the sitemap appeared in search.
  • Between them they took 48 clicks and 7,272 impressions.
  • The blog's 90 posts took 1,146 clicks.
  • The best release was Five Seasons, at position 7.3 with 15 clicks.

For Google AI features, in the 3 months to 4 October 2026, release pages had 102 impressions against 419,794 on blog posts. If your goal is organic ranking, that is the honest picture.

Outbound links from a release to the customer's site carry rel=sponsored, so they pass no authority. A release will not do anything for the Google rankings of your own site.

What AI engines do with the same page

On the AI side the pattern is consistent. A release goes live, AI crawlers fetch it within hours, and within a week an AI engine is quoting it as a source for questions about that company, usually in the first position of the answer.

  • Of the nine releases published between 22 September and 13 October 2026, eight were cited by an AI engine by the day-seven check, most at position one. The ninth, PlanningLeads.ie, was first cited on day thirty.
  • Across the longer dataset there are 147 AI citations of 41 releases. The median time from publish to first citation is 48.2 hours, 32% are cited within 24 hours and 71% within 7 days. The fastest took 12 minutes and the slowest 149 days.
  • In the thirty days to late October 2026, the newsroom pages were fetched 3,659 times by AI crawlers and viewed 412 times by people.

One caveat on where the citations land

Every recorded citation points at the release page on pressonify.ai. None points at a client domain. I first checked this on 18 July 2026; at the 27 October 2026 check it was 84 of 84. So the release is the source being quoted, and the value to you is that your business becomes part of the answer, not that traffic flows to your domain.

Two examples of what that looks like

PlantGift is a small Dublin plant business. On 10 May 2026, in fresh incognito sessions on two devices, Perplexity recommended PlantGift over Interflora on a generic shopping query. It cited the Pressonify release and plantgift.ie's own page as sources. The full account is in How Perplexity Recommended PlantGift Over Interflora.

The second has the same shape. On 25 September 2026 an incognito search for the category query "Construction API Ireland" named the PlanningLeads API. It cited its Pressonify launch release as its second source, beside planningleads.ie's own API, home and pricing pages. That is written up in Perplexity Cited a Pressonify Release for 'Construction API Ireland'.

Who this works for

It works for small businesses and startups that lack brand footprint. There are many use cases for publishing a press release, but results may not be as impactful for brands with well-established multi-channel marketing already built out.

Keywords are often locked down to first movers. The territory left to compete in is brand awareness, and making sure your business is the answer when customers use AI search.

Five habits that make a release easier to cite

These come from the tracking data and from what I have changed after misses.

  • Put specific numbers in the headline. The eight fastest-cited releases, from 12 minutes to about 20 hours, carried quantified claims such as "46 European City-Themed Perennials" and "Six Engineering Rules Prevent 65% of Injection Mold Defects". Generic launch language clustered in the slow tail.
  • Make the entity resolvable. Company name, domain and structured data should agree, so the engine can say who said it.
  • Publish in a machine-readable way: Schema.org NewsArticle markup, an llms.txt map and IndexNow pings at publish time.
  • Put the company name in the headline. Seventeen of the twenty questions scanned per release are brand questions. In October 2026 two good releases, GPSBob and The Edinburgh Boiler Company, went out with brand-less headlines. They had zero citations after six days while the newsroom index page was cited instead. I changed the headline rule, and both had citations at the next scan.
  • Use established facts and insights. Write from what the company can already show: its own figures, dates, products and what it has learned. State it plainly enough for an engine to quote word for word, and say the same fact on your own website so the two sources confirm each other. Nothing should be constructed to fill a slot.

If you want help with the headline rule, the free headline generator is a place to start.

My verdict

Don't buy one if you have little urgency, existing multi-channel marketing and strong domain authority. Or maybe do buy one, as another press release provides even more coverage, especially in AI search and the citation economy.

It will not elevate your existing brand in organic search ranking. If you want to be the answer when customers ask an AI engine, a release is an obvious early move. I make no promise of citations or coverage. When you are ready, the AI press release writing service drafts from your facts and checks every number against them, and the AI press release generator page explains the free preview and the €9.95 first release. Full pricing is on one page.

Questions people ask

Does a press release help SEO?

Not for your own site's Google rankings. Release links to the customer's site carry rel=sponsored, which passes no authority, and the release pages themselves send almost nobody from Google. In the 12 months to 26 October 2026, 91 of 96 release pages appeared in search and earned 48 clicks and 7,272 impressions between them.

Can an AI-written press release hurt my SEO?

SEO is rather moot for this kind of release, because the sponsored link passes no authority either way. The reason to publish one is to be easy for AI engines to ingest and quote, not to move Google rankings.

Do AI engines cite press releases?

In our tracking, yes, and quickly. Of nine releases published between 22 September and 13 October 2026, eight were cited by an AI engine by the day-seven check, most at position one. The ninth, PlanningLeads.ie, was first cited on day thirty. I do not promise citations or coverage.

Who should buy an AI press release and who should skip it?

It works for small businesses and startups that lack brand footprint. I would not buy one if you have little urgency, existing multi-channel marketing and strong domain authority. Even then, another release adds coverage in AI search, so it can still be worth it.

Does the press release link point to my website?

The release carries outbound links to your site, but they are rel=sponsored. Every recorded AI citation points at the release page on pressonify.ai rather than a client domain. I first checked this on 18 July 2026, and at the 27 October 2026 check it was 84 of 84.
